For anyone that knows me, and for those of you who dont, you will soon learn that as a person that grew up and lived in Memphis for 22 years, I follow ALL Memphis sports and will talk junk about/for them no matter how they are in the standings. Professional or college. But today's signing of Allen Iverson by the Grizzlies is a little puzzling, considering that just at the end of last season everything was about the youth movement in Memphis. But having said that, with the trade for Zach Randolph over the summer, does it really come as a surprise the Michael Heisley would make this happen? Not really. The guy is losing MAD amounts of money in the Griz, and ticket sales have been horrid at best. He is wanting to do anything that he can to put butts in the seats. I get it.
Now that I have said that though, here is my theory behind the entire summer. With Allen Iverson signing for 1 year, and Zach Randolph being in the last year of his contract, it looks more and more like trade bait to me. Especially if they are wanting to clear up cap room for the free agent class of '10. And let's face it, there are some huge names out there in that class. Having said that though, none of them will want to go to Memphis to play unless there is a winner on the floor. PERIOD!!! Here is where the Randolph and Iverson experiment comes into play. Can they lead the Griz, along with I might add, a great nucleus of young stars in the making, to some sort of respectability? We shall see. My prediction for the 09-10 campaign, if everyone is with the team through the end of the season, 34 wins. That means 48 more loses to add to the Memphis record, but that's all I can see.
If you disagree, please let me know. I would love to hear your arguement. In all seriousness. However, if you agree, let me know your feelings as well. It may be an interesting one in Memphis to say the least by the end of the season.
