classic background music

March 16th 2008 01:23
This morning, as I was once again experiencing the joys of V-Line trains (I basically lost my will to live two hours into the journey, it was that bad) I was trying to distract myself through my Ipod. Mostly by scrolling through old random playlists (I currently have exactly 99 playlists), and picking out songs that reminded me of things.

Now, not exactly revolutionary, I know. Songs do tend to remind people of places, situations, trips, etc etc. Mostly because they were playing in the background, or is that person's favourite song, or it was just a plain popular song at the time.

However, what seemed weird to me was that in certain cases of mine, there were songs that reminded me of people or places or even scenarios wherbey the song wasn't actually playing, or the perosn didn't even know of the song. Allow me to illustrate further:

'Sweet thing' by Van Morrison:
Now, to me this song reminds me of one of my favourite places in the world, a small town about 3.5 hours north-east of here. The thing is, I never actually played this song whilst driving there, or back, or actually staying there. It's purely my mind linking this song to this place, and I haven't actually heard it whilst I was there.

'A sorta fairytale' by Tori Amos.
This one reminds me of driving in a car with a good guy friend of mine, similar to what's occurring in the song, I suppose. However, this again, never actually happened. Yes, we've been driving before, but this song's never been playing, and I highly doubt he knows of the existence of the goddess that Amos is. I can see a small link between what's occurring in the song and the whole carf thing, but the fact that my mind has made up a whole driving journey? Weird.

So, I'm guessing this isn't just me that does this, and everyone has songs that remind them of people or places, but...it's odd. I also try to find out two things about people when I met them: their music taste, and their star sign. I don't know why, and I certainly don't really take much note of star signs, but I guess it's the whole associating music and attributes to people thing.

However, I can't find a way to stop the addicitive habit that is pigeonholing, so I figure I'll just enjoy my pretentious behaviour and continue. It's quite fun, actually.
